Why I Chose Dental Tourism in Mexico

Back in September, I cracked a tooth. Life was busy, so I put it off. Two months later, I went for a cleaning, which unfortunately exposed the root and caused significant discomfort.

The first dentist I visited quoted me $9,000 for the treatment. The second and third opinions were similar, with out-of-pocket costs exceeding $5,000, even with good insurance.

Frustrated by the cost, I discussed my situation with my office manager, and she mentioned that Cancun and Mexico City are popular destinations for dental tourism. At first, I laughed it off. But later that day, she sent me a link to Prime Advanced Dentistry, a reputable clinic located in Cancun’s hotel zone.

Curious, I decided to do some research. After looking up reviews, speaking with their team multiple times, and feeling reassured by their professionalism, I made the decision to give it a try. I booked my flights and accommodation, and the clinic took care of the rest, including transport to and from the airport and the dental office.

What to Expect When Traveling for Dental Work

Pre-Appointment Preparations

Before my appointment, I received an email with health forms and a detailed questionnaire. Everything was streamlined and easy to complete.

The day before my treatment, I received a text message and email confirming my driver’s name and pickup time.

The Day of My Appointment

Right on schedule, the driver picked me up and brought me to the clinic, located just a mile from my hotel. The dental office was one of the nicest I’ve seen—modern, impeccably clean, and welcoming.

I was greeted by a friendly staff who all spoke fluent English, making the entire process seamless. After a full set of X-rays, pictures, and an evaluation, I had the chance to speak with the periodontist, who was U.S.-trained. We discussed my care plan, and I felt comfortable moving forward.

Treatment Details

Due to a previous spine surgery that makes sitting still uncomfortable for long periods, I opted to receive anesthesia. This added $500 to the cost and required waiting for the anesthesiologist to arrive.

While waiting, the driver took me to a nearby pharmacy to fill my prescriptions for antibiotics, special mouthwash, and painkillers. This was incredibly convenient since I didn’t have to worry about running errands afterward while feeling groggy.

The procedure itself went smoothly. Afterward, I woke up feeling great—just a little numb, but otherwise comfortable.

The clinic even provided a complimentary Invisalign-style device with a temporary tooth to cover the missing one while I healed.

The total cost for me including the anesthesia was $1935. This does not include travel expenses as I used points, but depending on time of the year, flights can average $350-$500 and the hotels vary immensely. Still much cheaper than $9,000

Exceptional Aftercare

After returning to my hotel, the clinic called to check on me four times that day and three more times over the following days. Their attentiveness was unmatched, and I felt well-supported throughout the entire process.

Why Consider Dental Tourism?

This experience exceeded my expectations in every way. Not only was it significantly more affordable—saving me thousands of dollars—but the quality of care was exceptional.

Here are some key benefits of dental tourism in Mexico:

  • Affordability: Even with travel expenses, the overall cost was far lower than in the U.S.
  • Quality of Care: The clinic was modern, clean, and staffed with experienced, English-speaking professionals.
  • Convenience: Services like airport pickup, transport to appointments, and pharmacy runs made the process stress-free.
  • Attention to Detail: The staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure my comfort and satisfaction.
